2022 Tablet and PC Shipments May Plunge Despite Solid Commercial Sales: Report

2022 Tablet and PC Shipments May Plunge Despite Solid Commercial Sales: Report
While shipments, especially for commercial users, are still beating pre-pandemic levels, the booming PC market of the last two years is slowing and one research firm expects a significant decline in shipments for 2022.  IDC said headwinds from continued COVID-19 lockdowns in China, the war in Ukraine and global inflation are slowing demand for personal computers. The firm expects global shipments to decline 8.2 percent year over year in 2022 to 321.2 million units shipped. Tablets are expected to fall 6.2 percent in 2022. But IDC also noted that PC shipments are expected to remain well above pre-pandemic levels with strong commercial demand for device refreshes and emerging markets driving continued demand. IDC also expects shipments to return to positive annual growth in 2023 and beyond. Tablets, though, are expected to show an annual growth...

Report: Pentagon looking at ending $10B JEDI cloud computing contract

3733687366 5ed0a9bdca z
U.S. Defense Department officials are considering ending the JEDI cloud computing contract, the Wall Street Journal reported today. The JEDI, or Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, contract is set to see the Pentagon spend as much as $10 billion over 10 years on cloud infrastructure and services. The Pentagon awarded the deal to Microsoft Corp. in 2019.  The decision to choose Microsoft for the project came as a surprise because Amazon Web Services Inc., the largest player in the public cloud market by revenue, was widely expected to win JEDI. Microsoft’s contract win, which AWS says was influenced by political interference from former President Donald Trump, has been the subject of litigation ever since. Today’s report that the Defense Department has floated the idea of scrapping the contract comes a few months after the Pentagon...

Congress Should Fund $500M in Near-Term Quantum Computing Applications, Establish a National Quantum Research Cloud, New Report Argues

Congress Should Fund 500M in Near Term Quantum Computing Applications Establish
WASHINGTON, April 27,2021 — Quantum computing technologies are still in the early phases of development, but organizations are already using them in real-world applications from designing drugs to optimizing inventory systems to reducing carbon emissions. As other nations rapidly scale up their investments to develop and use quantum computing, a new report released today by the Center for Data Innovation urges U.S. policymakers to ensure the United States remains a leader in the field by investing in these near-term applications. Doing so would bolster the development of longer-term use cases, according to the Center, which would help cement U.S. economic competitiveness and protect national security. “The current enthusiasm for quantum computing could lead to a virtuous cycle of progress, as the semiconductor industry has seen, but only if...

Data centre virtualisation and cloud computing can play a pivotal role in power sector emissions reductions, says report

Data centre virtualisation and cloud computing can play a pivotal
A new report from power market analytics firm Aurora Energy Research suggests that increased deployment of (and continued improvements in) virtualisation technology could reduce potential future European computing emissions 55% by 2040. To put it another way, the use of virtualisation software (that allows for much more computation to be done with significantly less IT hardware), improved management and optimisation of operations, and hardware upgrades enable productivity and energy efficiency improvements in IT operations. Coupled with the increased usage of renewable energy to fulfil electricity requirements, these energy efficiency gains can help IT operations in Europe to substantially decrease their carbon footprint. This is especially important as more and more enterprises are engaging with digitised information to transform their business...
