Red Hat’s David Egts on Potential of Edge Computing, Open Hybrid Cloud for Government Data Management

Red Hats David Egts on Potential of Edge Computing Open Hybrid Cloud for Government Data Management
TYSONS CORNER, VA, May 19, 2021 — David Egts, senior director and chief technologist of Red Hat‘s North American public sector business, indicated during a question-and-answer session with ExecutiveBiz the use of edge computing devices and an open hybrid cloud approach could help agencies address data management challenges. “Edge devices are meant to provide near real-time information about whatever might be happening where that edge device is located.” Egts said a hybrid cloud platform that is built on an open-source substrate allows users to manage devices and move workloads at the edge. “Basically, an open hybrid cloud gives you a single, standardized infrastructure that always stays the same so that everything else can be different.” If you’re interested in data management strategies in the government, check out GovCon Wire’s...

Red Hat is doubling down on edge computing through a slew of enhancements in its portfolio to cater to emerging 5G and internet of things (IoT) use cases. Speaking at the virtual Red Hat Summit this year, Matt Hicks, executive vice-president of products and technologies at the company, said Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.4, for example, is expanding its capabilities to become a lightweight edge-native operating system (OS). Hicks said RHEL 8.4 now includes enhancements to streamline OS image generation, including customised OS images for edge computing workloads, along with simplified management of updates using container images. “And we’re not only working with customers to help them expand their deployments to the edge with confidence, but many edge solutions are also being delivered through partners with Linux embedded as a key...

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 arrives and take Linux to computing’s edge

Arpit Joshipura, The Linux Foundation's general manager of networking, once said "edge computing will overtake cloud computing" by 2025. By edge computing, Joshipura meant open compute and storage resources that are five to 20 milliseconds away. That used to be common. They were the computers in our server room. Now, we often rely on cloud computing instead. But, Red Hat, primarily a hybrid-cloud company now, is reminding us that its latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is also great for your local and edge servers.  They have reason to remind IT leaders of this. A recent Linux Foundation study, 2021 State of the Edge, predicts that by 2025, between the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and edge-related devices we'll need to deal with about 90 zettabytes of data. That's a heck of a lot of data! To...

Red Hat, Inc. stretched the tentacles of its operating system further out to the edge with a new version that makes edge deployments easier, along with a new Linux container and a handful of management capabilities. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.4, which will serve as the foundation for the Red Hat Edge initiative, delivers the capabilities of several products and services in the company’s portfolio to edge applications. The new release aims at a handful of vertical markets including transportation, enterprise devices and smart automobiles, particularly the telecommunications market. The focus on telecommunications doesn’t come as a surprise to most analysts. "Red Hat is going after users in several verticals with this version, but it's strongest vertical has been the telecommunications industry," said Judith Hurwitz, president of...
