Remote Work, Cloud Computing Have Implications for Lease Accounting

Auditors Article 202105250631
Companies are notoriously lax in preparing for new accounting standards, such as the forthcoming lease accounting standard for private companies. However, as Deloitte notes in a new poll, some businesses may be even further behind than usual given changes from the pandemic. For instance, real estate needs are changing for companies with employees working remotely. With that adoption of remote work, they may need to exit their lease, modify their lease or execute a sale-and-leaseback transaction. As those scenarios play out, different accounting treatments are needed, according to Deloitte. Deloitte also notes that recent migrations to the cloud could also have an impact as companies adopt the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s cloud computing accounting guidance. Under the lease accounting standard, Deloitte says companies could configure...

A hefty number of retailers, 73%, view edge computing as a strategic investment in deploying digital experiences and nearly half, 47%, plan to invest in the technology in less than a year. The technology is emerging as an "integral" aspect in digital applications in both e-commerce and the brick-and-mortar retail environment, according to IDC Research sponsored by Lumen Technologies."Key retail operations rely on real-time or frequent access to data, and edge computing can improve data access speed and performance, as well as maintain data security which is imperative in retail," Leslie Hand, vice president, IDC Retail Insights, said in a press release on the findings. "Edge computing solutions can drive improvements in areas including personalized customer engagement, order management, customer self-service and omnichannel process...

Ampere, the chip startup building Arm-based server processors and led by former Intel exec Renee James, has updated its product roadmap and announced new customers. The biggest news is that the company is designing its own custom cores for release in 2022. Ampere Altra processors are already on the market but use the Neoverse core from Arm. When it introduces the next generation Ampere built on a 5nm process next year, it will be with a homegrown core optimized around cloud workloads."If you go back to the objectives we had, which were delivering predictable, high performance, scalability and power efficiency, we really need to develop our own cores ... to be able to actually focus in on the exact way that the cloud wants single-threaded performance," Jeff Wittich, chief product officer for Ampere, told Network World."This also helps us from a...

Edge computing: powering the future of manufacturing

Existing on-premises and centralized cloud infrastructure can’t support the vast computing needs of these powerful applications, which require low latency—or data-transfer delay—to smoothly transport and get real-time access to data. To reduce latency and bandwidth use, as well as rein in costs, computing power and processes must be closer to the physical location of the data. The solution? Move computing power to local infrastructure at the "edge" of the network, rather than relying on distant data centers. A whopping 90% of industrial enterprises will use edge computing technology by 2022, according to Frost & Sullivan, while a recent IDC report (registration required) found that 40% of all organizations will invest in edge computing over the next...

Iahikawa, Japan - Humans benefit from playing games more than some might realize. Games can be a relaxed approach to learning or honing our problem-solving skills while relieving stress. However, game playing generally carries a considerable amount of decision-making, involving mathematical and statistical considerations that we make to decide on what we think is the best move. Thus, games showcase many of the impressive faculties and inner workings of the human brain, which in turns makes them a great testbed and playground for research on artificial intelligence...

The rate of innovation in the 21st century is unprecedented. Every existing solution in the physical world has a better alternative in the digital realm. The shift has been beneficial, especially for centralized corporations in the first two decades of the new millennium. The advent of blockchain and the demonstration of its capabilities is proving to be an equalizer. According to Gartner, the business value added by the blockchain would rise to $3.1 trillion by 2030, up from $176 billion in 2025. With this forecast, many venture capitalists now invest in platforms integrating decentralized architectures due to expanding use cases.Digital requirements have led to the underutilization of computing resources. Corporations, small companies, and individuals sink billions, if not trillions, for better computers and other gears only to be left idle 30...
