How sustainability and hybrid work has become a part of computer design | Alex Cho
Alex Cho, president of HP Personal Systems, showed off a bunch of gear from a HyperX keyboard with zany animal characters to HP’s latest Omen gaming PCs while at the CES 2023 tech trade show. Those new products from HP underscored the big trends of modern computer design, with an emphasis on sustainability and the hybrid world of work and personal time. HP Personal Systems showed up with a variety of new products, and I got a chance to interview Cho about the trends that he has seen. We talked in a showroom at the Aria hotel in Las Vegas, after most of the products were unveiled at the show. Cho sees hybrid computers as a huge catalyst for innovation, while sustainability has gone in unpredictable directions — like using coffee grounds in a computer. Here’s an edited transcript of our interview. Alex Cho is president of HP...

How to troubleshoot your computer peripherals

photo of a white keyboard and a black mouse
No matter how well you look after your computer, something is going to eventually go wrong. And the issue won’t always be the machine itself, but maybe something you’ve plugged into it. Peripherals (mice, keyboards, gamepads, webcams, and printers) can sometimes be a pain—they might either stop working or cause problems with the hardware and the software on your computer. But before you make a (potentially expensive) call to a tech support professional, try troubleshooting your gadget problem yourself. There are certain steps that can be helpful in all scenarios, and that may well get your hardware working properly again. Do some testing Before you troubleshoot any tech problem, you need to know exactly where the problem is. The best way to do this is to test your peripheral in another computer. Don’t skip this step—even if...

Google plans to build a practical quantum computer by 2029 at new center

Google's new Quantum AI Campus in Santa Barbara, California, will employ hundreds of researchers, engineers and other staff. Stephen Shankland/CNET Google has begun building a new and larger quantum computing research center that will employ hundreds of people to design and build a broadly useful quantum computer by 2029. It's the latest sign that the competition to turn these radical new machines into practical tools is growing more intense as established players like IBM and Honeywell vie with quantum computing startups. The new Google Quantum AI campus is in Santa Barbara, California, where Google's first quantum computing lab already employs dozens of researchers and engineers,...

Google wants to build a useful quantum computer by 2029

Sycamore Final.max 2000x2000
Google is aiming to build a “useful, error-corrected quantum computer” by the end of the decade, the company explained in a blog post. The search giant hopes the technology will help solve a range of big problems like feeding the world and climate change to developing better medicines. To develop the technology, Google has unveiled a new Quantum AI campus in Santa Barbara containing a quantum data center, hardware research labs, and quantum processor chip fabrication facilities. It will spend billions developing the technology over the next decade, The Wall Street Journal reports. The target announced at Google I/O on Tuesday comes a year and a half after Google said it had achieved quantum supremacy, a milestone where a quantum computer has performed a calculation that would be impossible on a traditional classical computer. Google says its...

Alphabet Inc.’s Google plans to spend several billion dollars to build a quantum computer by 2029 that can perform large-scale business and scientific calculations without errors, said Hartmut Neven, a distinguished scientist at Google who oversees the company’s Quantum AI program. The company recently opened an expanded California-based campus focused on the effort, he said.“We are at this inflection point,” said Dr. Neven, who has been researching quantum computing at Google since 2006. “We now have the important components in hand that make us confident. We know how to execute the road map.” Chief Executive Sundar Pichai announced the timeline and introduced the new Google Quantum AI campus in Santa Barbara County on Tuesday at Google’s annual developer...

Ireland’s First Quantum Computer Engineering Centre Launched at Tyndall National Institute

Irelands First Quantum Computer Engineering Centre Launched at Tyndall National
May 17, 2021 — A multi-million-euro investment will see 900 sq meters of research space dedicated to quantum technology at Tyndall National Institute’s new facility on Cork’s North Mall and will be a key part of the Institute’s plans to double in size and impact by 2025. Tyndall is also recruiting 5 new senior research leaders, including a Head of Quantum Research to lead the overall Centre and who will build new quantum research teams to accelerate the growth of the centre. Overall, this new investment will result in an additional 45 quantum research jobs giving a further boost to Tyndall’s quantum ecosystem that already counts the highest concentration of researchers in Ireland. The announcement was made at an official launch event on 13 May, which saw world leading experts speak to Irish researchers, policy makers and industry leaders...

IBM on track with next-level, 1,121 qubit quantum computer by 2023

Jaime Thomas IBM Think 2021
This decade could hold more than a few breakthroughs for IBM, as the company claims to remain on target with plans to release a 1,121-qubit IBM Quantum Condor processor by 2023.  To achieve the long sought after quantum qubit status, IBM is relying on a harmonious ecosystem. For Big Blue, a well-timed intersection of hardware and software efforts brings the roadmap into view. “The key thing that we focused on in the last six months is really an articulation of our roadmaps, so the roadmap around hardware, the roadmap around software, and we’ve also done quite a bit of ecosystem development,” said Jamie Thomas (pictured), general manager of strategy and development of IBM Systems. Thomas spoke with Dave Vallente, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during IBM Think. They discussed the quantum computer,...
