Alibaba investors have banked on cloud computing to drive significant growth, as competition in the company’s main e-commerce business heats up. In recent months, however, the cloud unit has parted ways with a major customer, was given the cold shoulder by some Chinese government clients and has overhauled its organizational structure, people familiar with the matter said. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. reported last week that cloud computing revenue grew 37% in the quarter ended March 31 from the same period a year earlier, the slowest quarterly growth since it went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014. The company said the slowdown was due to the loss of a major Chinese internet client’s international business due to “non-product related requirements." That client was ByteDance Ltd., the owner of the social-video app...

It’s the weekend – time to get cozy and fire up the latest binge-worthy show on Netflix. You start up Netflix and see the dreaded loading wheel. You’re not sure how long it’ll spin – 5 seconds or 15 seconds – but it’s enough to get under your skin. This lag is actually Netflix connecting to the cloud, so it can pull up the selected show. Just about everything is connected via the cloud, but as the Internet of Things keeps growing, it puts more stress on the cloud, causing bigger latency issues. So how do we get faster speeds? Enter edge computing. What is edge computing? Simply put, it brings the computation and data storage closer to devices that need them. Typically, IoT devices rely on a central location that could be located thousands of miles away. Edge computing moves storage and servers closer to where the data is. This...

Better info transfer marks step forward for quantum computing By Lance VaughnMay 07, 2021 Quantum science has the potential to revolutionize modern technology with more efficient computers, communication, and sensing devices. But challenges remain in achieving these technological goals, especially when it comes to effectively transferring information in quantum systems. A regular computer consists of billions of transistors, called bits. Quantum computers, on the other hand, are based on quantum bits, also known as qubits, which can be made from a single electron. Unlike ordinary transistors, which can be either “0” (off) or “1” (on), qubits can be both “0” and “1” at the same time. The ability of individual qubits to occupy these so-called superposition states, where they...

Amazon’s Bid to Recover JEDI Cloud Computing Contract Stays Alive

social
WASHINGTON— Amazon. com Inc.’s bid to win back the Pentagon’s JEDI cloud computing contract stayed alive Wednesday as a federal judge rejected motions by the Defense Department and Microsoft Corp. to dismiss much of Amazon’s challenge of the contract award. Judge Patricia Campbell-Smith of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims rejected the motions, according to a court docket entry. Her opinion and order in the case weren’t made public immediately, making the extent of the government’s legal defeat unclear. The move is significant nonetheless because it opens the door to continued protracted court battles over the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI, contract. ...

Now that’s edge computing Astronauts at the International Space Station will soon be taking delivery of an HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 (SBC-2). Expected to be in service for two to three years, the edge computing device will connect ISS users to Microsoft’s Azure cloud. In 2107, NASA sent the first Spaceborne Computer, an HPE Linux machine, to the ISS to give astronauts high-performance computing capabilities for onboard operations and provide extra power for their experiments.   The ruggedized SBC-2 is built on the HPE Edgeline Converged Edge system and offers twice the compute speed as the original Spaceborne Computer. GPUs allow SBC-2 to more easily ingest and process image-intensive data from satellites, environmental sensors and cameras in real time. The GPU capabilities will also support specific...
