Why AWS Could Own the Future of Quantum Computing

ab 84589
Without any of its own hardware and most of its software heavy-lifting dedicated to front-end development, security, and broader AWS systems integration, the cloud giant could own the quantum computing user base. The reasons are simple, even if the business could get complicated. We often talk about future leadership in quantum computing by way of hardware innovation but if (or when) the technology suddenly takes off, the real differentiator will be accessibility and service. That might take an approach that is multi-platform with a defined pricing, support, and security model and while quantum startups can handle physics, building global front-end services is a different ballgame. Amazon Web Services already knows how this story goes from its experiences building a multi-platform mega-platform for machine learning and expects the same lessons...

IBM Cloud Leader Howard Boville Is Writing Cloud Computing Chapter Two: Enterprises Should Take Note

I like to think that I have a knack for identifying companies making waves in specific technology areas. One such company is IBM with cloud technology. Yes, IBM making waves with cloud technologies. I have written several articles tracking the progress and evolution of the IBM Cloud offering. When I attach the Red Hat acquisition and the industry's transition to hybrid, the real magic could happen. I believe IBM needs to get there, get there fast, and tell everybody about it at the top of its lungs about why it’s the better cloud for certain circumstances. Recently I was fortunate to speak with IBM’s hybrid cloud leader, Howard Boville (Senior Vice President of IBM Hybrid Cloud), to hear his thoughts on the evolution of IBM Cloud, which he refers to as "cloud chapter 2". Howard Boville, Senior Vice President, IBM...

AWS, QCI look to bridge classical and quantum computing

businessanalytics article 008
Hoping to bridge the gap between classical and quantum computers, startup Quantum Computing Inc.'s Qatalyst constrained optimization technology now works with AWS across the two platforms. The offering permits inexperienced quantum users to submit complex problems to one of several quantum-based systems through AWS' Braket quantum-based service. Users have the option of submitting the same problem to Qatalyst for either hybrid classical/quantum or can submit it to Qatalyst for pure quantum processing. "Our goal from the start was focusing on bringing business value to users and to provide them with a software product that is agnostic across quantum computing platforms," said Robert Liscouski, CEO of QCI. "We also want to reduce the amount of dependency there is on high-level programming resources that, historically, are required to run a...

Cloud computing spending in the first quarter of 2021 reached $41.8 billion, growing 35% on a year on year basis with Amazon Web Services still in the lead, according to analyst firm Canalys. There are no surprises in the order of ranking among cloud giants in Canalys' Q1 2021 cloud spending report: Amazon Web Services (AWS) still leads with a 32% share of spending, trailed by Microsoft Azure with 19% and Google Cloud with 7%. Marketshare splits between the three businesses remains unchanged from last quarter.  All cloud giants saw pandemic-driven growth as enterprises accelerated digital transformations, with apps shifting to the cloud as well as data center consolidation.  SEE: Guide to Becoming a Digital Transformation Champion (TechRepublic Premium)The new figures follow Amazon's Q1 results yesterday, where it revealed it...

To allow more visibility into and management of Amazon Web Services (AWS) resources and expenses and minimize the cloud skills training required to operate these resources, AWS Partner RONIN created the RONIN research computing platform. RONIN gives researchers the ability to create exactly the computers or storage that they need in minutes. With access to the flexibility and scalability of the cloud, researchers are able to store and process larger datasets, collaborate globally, and adapt to changing technologies and research methods instantly. Research IT can spend less time provisioning unique hardware and systems, and spend more time enabling researchers to leverage advanced computing technologies and algorithms. Read this blog to learn more about the types of research workloads possible on AWS through RONIN. RONIN empowers researchers with a...
