HP, Bay Area tech mainstay, to lay off up to 6,000 people
HP, the hardware tech company that remains a massive mainstay in the Bay Area, announced this week that it would conduct layoffs over the next three years — with a bulk of them happening this fiscal year.As part of a restructuring plan HP calls the “Future Ready strategy,” the Palo Alto-headquartered computer and peripherals manufacturer hopes to save at least $1.4 billion by the 2025 fiscal year, according to its earning notice posted this week. Part of this plan is cutting up to 6,000 jobs by that point. A majority of these layoffs, according to the earnings notice, will take place in the 2023 fiscal year — with “the rest split approximately equally between fiscal 2024 and 2025.” The company anticipates that it will spend about $600 million in “restructuring” in the 2023 fiscal year and $200 million each in 2024 and...

For most people, a little extra color or a larger range of tones don't really differentiate one screen from another. Are there hidden gems in Dollarama’s tech section? [Part 2]

Are there hidden gems in Dollarama’s tech section? [Part 2]
You might not realize it, but Dollarama sells a wide variety of tech products, ranging from wireless speakers, headphones, PC peripherals to wireless chargers, smart lights, power banks and more, all for under $5. Last month, I outlined five tech products available at Dollarama, with some of them turning out to be actual tech gems that cost under $5, while others didn’t work at all, as expected. Now I’m back with round two to see if digging around your local Dollarama for cheap tech is worth the trip. Electra’s Studio Headphones Electra’s Studio Headphones aren’t a product I’d recommend to an audiophile, though for a casual listener looking for pocket-friendly headphones, they’re not an awful option because they’re foldable and affordable. The headphones cost $4.25 and resemble the generic headphones airlines give you on long...

Building the fastest esports gaming PC in 2022

Building the fastest esports gaming PC in 2022
With all-new parts, we’ve put together a lightning-fast esports gaming PC. We’ll take you step-by-step through the build, accessories, features like Nvidia Reflex, and more. What makes a good gaming PC? Well, you have to strike a balance of parts, and what you are going to use the system for. For this build, we’re focussing on esports gaming performance. This means that we’re likely not going to be targeting 4K in many games, and our parts list should reflect that. Instead, we’re going to focus on getting extreme 1440p, high frame-rate performance, instead. With the advent of 1440p / 360 Hz monitors, we’re going to be kitting out the PC based on that, instead. Parts Peripherals How does it perform? Dexerto With our setup finally, all together, we’ve managed to reach around 399 FPS in games like CS:GO, while AAA’s like...

Astros agree to three-year deal with reliever Rafael Montero

Astros agree to three-year deal with reliever Rafael Montero
Rafael Montero and the Astros are in agreement on a three-year, $34.5M deal, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. Montero is the third reliever to fall off the board early, after the Padres re-signed Robert Suarez and the Mets held on to Edwin Diaz. It’s a remarkable deal considering Montero has amassed just 0.1 bWAR over his career and had an ERA north of six just last year, but it speaks to how good he’s looked since landing in Houston and the early value teams are placing on high-end relief pitching. Montero, 32, tossed 68 1/3 innings out of Houston’s pen this year in addition to six innings thrown late last year after coming over from Seattle, posting a 2.18 ERA in that time with a 26.8% strikeout rate and an 8.6% walk rate. He’d posted an ugly 7.27 ERA (albeit with decent peripherals) in Seattle last year, before the...
